It is the fifth year we have hosted students from our friendship school, Kori Nevers Gakuin Elementary School, Osaka, Japan.
This year, we welcomed 15 students and 3 staff on Sunday 28 July. The Kori students stayed with some of our Year 6 families for five nights.
Three Year 6 classes welcomed five Japanese students to their classrooms, and enjoyed inclusion programs such as: Australian money maths, Japanese and Australian Geography, playing board games and cricket, Possum Magic storytelling, food tasting, including Australian classics, ANZAC biscuits, lamingtons and Vegemite sandwiches.
It was also a great opportunity for SPW students to speak some Japanese with the Japanese students. The Kori students and staff joined in the fun of installing the school artwork on the school fence by adding tags with messages on the back.
The Year 6 host and buddy students enjoyed an excursion to Mount Lofty and Cleland Wildlife Park with the Kori students. It was exciting to see so much wildlife, especially native Australian animals such as koalas and kangaroos. The students also took a tour to learn about some other Australian animals such as snakes, possums and lizards.
The Kori students caught a tram to the Central Market the following day to enjoy more Australian food and learn about the history of the market. They were also able to do some souvenir shopping before heading back to school.
Farewelling our Japanese friends
Sadly, our wonderful host families had to say ‘Sayonara’ to our Kori students on Saturday night. There were a lot of tears, as our students and Kori students shared a lot of fun memories and built long lasting friendships.
Finally, I would like to say huge thank you to our Year 6 students, teachers and host families for helping us make this program so successful. I look forward to continuing our friendship program with Kori Nevers Gakuin Elementary School.
“It was literally the best week ever. I know everyone had fun because the students from Kori Nevers were so kind!” – Eliza
“Having the Japanese students here at SPW was the most fun thing ever, and I would do it again in a heartbeat. I got to make great friendships and laugh and share every moment we had together. I will always treasure those special memories.” – Ava
“I really enjoyed the visiting student program. I enjoyed making lots of long lasting memories and moments together. I enjoyed the experience of showing Australian animals, sharing food, and playing games together. It was such a privilege to work with them. I thought it showed such bravery for kids our age and younger visiting Australia for the first or second time. I loved the entire experience and enjoyed spending time with them and making new friends. It is wonderful to have this connection with SPW to Kori Nevers Elementary School in Japan.” – Maisie
“I really enjoyed this program because we made long lasting friendships and I hope we get to see them again. I loved showing them all the native Australian animals and teaching them how to use Australian money. This program was one of the best experiences I have had at SPW.” – Jazzy
