The SPW Early Learning Centre is using Seesaw for the first time this year.
We’ve asked Amanda Kelly, Head of Learning and Teaching, to explain a little more about what Seesaw is and why we are using it within our ELC.
What is Seesaw?
Seesaw is a secure online Learning Journal to record photos, observations and comments, in line with the Early Years curriculum, to build up a record of your child’s experiences during his or her time with us. Content may include things like photos, videos, drawings and voice recordings.
Seesaw journals are private and only accessible by the teacher, students, and parents. This system allows us to work with parents and carers to share information and record the children’s play and learning in and outside of the classroom.
Why are we using Seesaw in the ELC?
Our move away from end of term portfolios means you will have greater access to recent learning and events. You will be able to share moments with your child from that day or week, rather than waiting until the end of term, or relying on being in the ELC to see the Day Book. Your child’s journal will be built upon each year, creating a wonderful picture of their development during his or her time throughout the ELC.
How do parents access Seesaw?
You can download Seesaw’s family App for iOS, Android, or use the web to view your student’s learning artefacts. When your child adds new work, you will receive a notification to see, hear and respond to your child’s post. You only have access to your own child’s work and all of the content is stored securely.
How do we protect the privacy of children on Seesaw?
Each child will have an individual and private area, only accessible by his or her family members. When photographs are taken of a group of children, or the entire class, adults of all children tagged in the photo will have viewing access. Each child has only their first name and initial of their last name recorded in Seesaw. Teachers will not share or include family names via any content on Seesaw.
How do parents get started using Seesaw?
To get started we will email you a link to your child’s class. You will need to select your child’s name which triggers an action for the class teacher. The teacher will then acknowledge your request and allow you access to only your child’s content.
We are confident you will love sharing in your child’s learning experiences and life in the ELC using Seesaw. If you have further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact your room leader, or Head of Learning and Teaching, Amanda Kelly
